I am doing a series presentations in 3 sections of an Elementary Methods class about Glogster. I decided I would put all the related resources I found about using and learning to use in the classroom on my blog for public consumption.

The projects these pre-sevice teachers are doing is a book/author study, kind of a PR/advertising piece relating to a series of multicultural books purchased through a grant written by Dr. Laurie Curtis.  This is our third try with coming up a a suitable “tool” for the task.  We began with Photobooth & QuicktimePro, then moved to Voicethread and we have now decided that Glogster may just be the right solution for accomplishing what we need for the grant website.

I mention the other things we have tried because in working with pre-service teachers, they also need to see that every teacher reflects on the teaching & learning process and are always attempting to find a better way.  Sometimes it means jumping ship from what you did last time and trying something totally different.  I applaud Laurie for her willingness to try new things and if they don’t pan out, to try something else.  So far, from the first projects that have come in this semester, it appears that Glogster, just might be the answer we were seeking.

I have posted the process here for the students in the three classes, maybe you will find it useful too.

GLOGSTER: Poster Yourself

First, as an educator, be sure you are using Glogster EDU. ( http://edu.glogster.com/) There is a Glogster.com, but sometimes some of the “posters” in the gallery on the home page are not appropriate for education.  So stick with the EDU side.  It works exactly the same way and has all the same features.

  4. Drives new interest levels around subjects that may have been seen as “boring” before

  8. Unlimited shelf life
  9. Improves student-teacher relationships by allowing both to explore Web 2.0 & learning concepts together
  10. Keeps teachers and students up to date with modern technology

Click on Categories for great examples:  the category- Libary has some that are similar to what you are doing for you Multicultural Book Assignment.  And the Technology Category gives you some great how-tods, like how to use the Paper from digital scrap-booking sites.

Steps & Things to remember when creating & sharing your GLOG:

  1. Make your Glog Public. When you Publish, be sure to check the PUBLIC box. Remember, Dr. Curtis and I will be adding all your Glogs to the website for this grant project. In other words they will be used by many, students and teachers around the state.
  2. When you make things like a Google docs or Voicethread a part of your Glog, they need to be shared as Public before you add to the Glog.
    Voicethread: click on Publishing Options button at the bottom and check the box that says Allow Anyone to View before grabbing the EMBED code.
    Google Docs: Click on the Share button in the upper right and choose share PUBLIC, anyone on the web
  3. YouTube: Make sure you uncheck the Include Related Content box when you grab the code from a YouTube video. Sometimes that additional content is not appropriate.
  4. A Glogster (Poster) is kinda like a puzzle.  Things need to fit together.
  5. Be careful your background does not distract from the actual content. Good places to find more backgrounds are digital scrapbooking sites, the papers work pretty well.
  6. Make sure your text is readable.  Remember you audience will be children.
  7. At the bottom of the Glog, in small, but readable font, include, your first & last name, class section,  Spring 2011 (e.g. Cyndi Danner-Kuhn, Section R, Spring 2011)
  8. Save & Publish, when you save it will ask you to name it, please use the Book title.
  9. Add your Glog information for this project to Dr. Curtis Google Form.

Recording your voice:

On a Mac, Use GarageBand, share as mp3

On a Windows, I suggest Audacity. Audacity: The Free, Cross-Platform Sound Editor. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/.  This will require you to download and install the program, but it is FREE and EXCELLENT. By the way it works on a Mac too.  The cool part is under the Effects menu.  Let’s say you are reading a book out loud, You can cange your voice and make each character in the book sound different.  Very FUN!

Adding Movies you make to your Glog:

On a Mac I would suggest using QuickTime, Photobooth, GarageBand or iMovie.

On a PC, Windows MovieMaker.

    Thanks for linking to the blog post I wrote. Glogster has so much potential to be used by our students as an alternative to the conventional title page, poster or paper advertisement activity.

    Tools like these will raise engagement and effectiveness to our teaching practice. Thanks for spreading the word about a great 21st century teaching tool.

    Glogster is a innovative tool that give creative freedom to the user. It is user friendly and can be manipulated to meet a variety of needs depending on it’s purpose. I will be using this tool in my classroom regardless the grade level, content area or concentration, Glogster is brilliant.

    I really enjoyed Glogster. I had a lot of fun creating my poster for Block B! I think it’s a great way to implement technology into the classroom. It is also a great way of engaging students and introducing new content.

    Like most people, I was nervous when I first started creating this glog. However, in the end I loved it! This was a fun and great activity to do. I enjoyed re-telling the book I read, For You are a Kenyan Child, through my own eyes. Glogster is a great activity to do in the classroom and I will definitely use this to stay connected with my students. Check out my glog! :)

    Like many others, I was a little scared of glogster at the start of this assignment. I soon found out that it is a very simple site to navigate through. I found myself enjoying this project and could have spent hours upon hours playing with the different graphics. If I could change one thing though, I would add a search bar in the graphics section. I found it to be time consuming to search through them all to find what I was looking for.

    Although I was SO nervous to start making my Glogster when I first heard about the project, it ended up being a big success! I am the most technologically illiterate person there is, so I was worried about navigating around the site and getting everything to work. After getting started, I learned how to “self teach” myself to work the program. It allowed for a lot of creativity and I was able to make my book “come alive” with the Glogster. It was fairly easy to navigate and I only had a few problems while attempting to make my Glogster (I made a voice over in GarageBand and I couldn’t figure out how to make it a live link on my Glogster, so it is just a purple button now). Other than that, I found Glogster to be easy to navigate and a really fun project in the end. It is a great alternative to the standard posters kids make in class, and I would definitely utilize this program with upper elementary school students! :)

    I really liked using Glogster. It is very easy to use and straight forward. The options for creativity are endless. It is way better than giving a presentation off of a poster board.

    I thought Glogster was okay. The site needs to be updated to be a little more user friendly before I would want to utilize it frequently in my classroom. (One improvement I would make if I could, would be a search bar for graphics.) I think that my project ended up turning out okay, but it was more time consuming than I thought it might be (though I am a slight perfectionist.) For just introducing a book this project ended up working good, but I’m uncertain if having students create something elaborate with lots of research, videos, picture clips etc. involved if it’d be worth the time. Unique tool, maybe if I tinkered with this tool more, maybe it’d grow on me.

    After completing my Glog, I was really happy with the final project. I thought this project was really fun and a great way to incorporate technology into the classroom. After getting use to the Glog features, I found it to be pretty easy and it had a lot of stuff to offer. I will definately use this in my future classroom!

    Now that I have the whole Glogster website figured out, I really enjoyed it. I thought it was a creative way to introduce a book to the rest of my classmates. There was a point when I had absolutely no idea what was going on… So, that was a little frustrating. I did have trouble saving and uploading my glog though. Overall, it was a very neat and different way to use technology into the classroom!

    When first starting to use Glogster, I was really excited. There were a lot of things you could do and graphics you could choose from. I began working on the Glogster but soon became frustrated as I tried to add in details to the overall page. If using Glogster for very simplistic means, it is a great tool. If you are having students use this tool as an introductory activity where they can create a page with just details about themselves, it would be a good tool to use. For things that require more details and interactive qualities, I would not use this tool. I did not think that the tool was very user friendly, the program itself would delete a glog after working on it, or would not show up on your profile. I was also frustrated with the limited capability of the text boxes, and the page space. I believe that this could eventually be a great tool, but the creators of the website need to work out some major bugs before that happens.

    I really enjoyed Glogster. I liked having the freedom to be creative and chose from several different colors, patterns, etc. I also experienced some trouble with Glogster. On several occasions, it told me that it was not able to save, but I should try again later. When I would try again later, the same thing would happen and it seemed to be a neverending cycle. Finally, it saved and published! Thank goodness! One of my favorite things about the glogs were the ability to link to other websites. The glog doesn’t allow a ton of room to add things, so being able to link was very helpful. All in all, a very enjoyable project!

    I really enjoyed doing the glogster after I figured out how to navigate around the website. There are so many colors, text boxes, and backgrounds to choose from, even when using the free version. It was hard to pick just one thing that I liked! My project turned out a lot better than what I expected. I am not an artistic/creative person when it comes to things like this, so it was a pleasant surprise to see mine turn out so well. I would suggest this website to others.

    Glogster is a really fun way to share literature and other projects. I made one for a multicultural book project and it turned out really well. I am a big scrapbooker so this was a fun way to “scrapbook”online:) I love that there are so many different options to use on your page, which makes it easy to use with a variety of projects. However, I did have some problems with this website. I had more information than I could fit on the page and you can’t lengthen it. Therefore I had to cram it into little space. I also had some problems with the text boxes and getting them to be the right size. Yesterday I had lots of trouble loading the page but that could have just been a one time deal. Overall, I would probably use glogster again because it is a unique way to incorporate technology into the classroom.

    After completing the project in class I would say the final product turned out pretty good. I do have trouble saying that the process of getting there was easy, it was actually pretty confusing using this site. I found that on more than one occasion Glogster would delete my page, or tell me I hadn’t started a Glog when I had. I was also troubled by the page length. There is only one page length to fit a large amount of material on which made the page seem clustered and unorganized. Other than those things Glogster is a good site. There are lots of different options for things and it was fun to look around and see what all the site had to offer.

    Thanks for the post. I have never used Glogster but am looking for tools to use in my high school Spanish classroom. This looks like an excellent tool to help students express what they have learned or researched in a creative way. I think a project using Glogster as a tool would be a great way to get students’ interest and motivate them.
