Which web 2.0 tools are best suited for enabling collaboration in teaching and learning? A trio of ed tech experts offer up their top three choices apiece.

Ten years into the new century, we’re still trying to find the web 2.0 tools that best facilitate collaboration—one of the fundamentals of 21st century learning. As the number of tools continues to grow, and fuzzy terms like cloud computing, hashtags, and synchronous live platforms are introduced into the lexicon daily, even the most tech-savvy educators can have trouble determining which technologies have a role in a collaborative academic environment and which are simply new toys.

We asked three top ed tech consultants (Steve Hargadon, John Kuglin, Leslie Fisher) to each select three web 2.0 tools they believe are ideal for fostering collaboration in teaching and learning. The result is a compilation of technologies that can “do things of value,” as one of our experts says, in the instructional and professional development realms, and in both the traditional and the virtual classroom.

Game-based learning, mobile devices, and cloud computing will find a place in schools nationwide

eSchoolNews: The New Media Consortium that says that cloud computing, collaborative learning, game-based learning, and mobile devices are set to “take hold” within the K-12 environment within the next couple of years.

Cloud computing and collaborative learning environments are set to take hold in K-12 schools in the very near future, with mobile devices, game-based learning, and other education technologies to follow suit in the next few years, according to the 2010 Horizon Report’s K-12 Edition, released by the New Media Consortium (NMC).

NMC researchers examined 100 different technologies and whittled them down to the six most prominent technologies that are on the verge of classroom adoption in the next five years. Those six technologies were placed into three categories according to how close schools are to implementing them on wide scale.

If you don’t know who Jeff Utecht is, you really should.  I feel as though I know hm, although I have never met him in person.  I follow and talk with him via Twitter and other Social Networking.  He is one of the hosts of ED Tech Weekly Podcast show on Sunday evenings (6:00 central time, 7:00 Eastern) .  I subscribe to the show via iTunes Podcasts, but, I try to participate in the live show on Sunday’s as often as possible.  It is so much fun to be in the chat room with a group of educators.  The conversations are rich and sharing is amazing!!  Worth your time for sure.

Jeff recently had an open course of which I sorta, kinda participated.  Actually, I would have to say I was a lurker!!  But I learned a ton!!

I downloaded the book and at first glance, I plan to purchase it too.  Only $9.99 from Lulu.   I can already see I want a printed copy and 102 pages on my  printer would work, but the $9.99 is probably a cheaper way to print and he does deserve to make a bit of money on this project.  Don’t you agree!!

Well this certainly worth downloading, 53 pages, in PDf or from an eBook publisher called ISSUU.

Ana Maria Menezes, Life Feast BlogThis is my personal blog and an attempt to try different ideas on blogging. I´m very interested in learning and my personal project is to learn how to use internet tools to enrich my classes and offer variety to my students.

I´ve finally managed to finish the english version of the e-book I´ve published earlier this year.I describe 20 webtools I´ve tried out, give examples of how teachers have been using it and suggest other ways to use them in class.

The e-book is free and can be read online or downloaded from the link below.

I have an iPad now and so I am always looking for more useful ways to use it. Geez, there are a ton. I had heard folks talking about Evernote for a while now, and had bookmarked it in my delicious and diigo, but never really given it a try. Last night, I discovered it was available for the iPad too.  So decided it was time to explore a bit more.

I just posted a twee looking for info about how folks use Evernote, a former student of mine, who interesting enough is from China, pinged me through iChat.  Hu Ning Ning, aka Tony said:

“Evernote is a cross platform app, you can use it on iphone, ipad, android, blackberry, windows mobile, mac, pc. Evernote app has some tips in itself. I use it for paper, for remembering something. uch as if I need to remember a note on the wall. I just need to use evernote to take a photo, then I can search it in Evernote. Evernote will OCR the photo and read the words in the photo. ifhttp://www.evernote.com/about/learn_more/. It has plugins for browsers. So you can capture any webpage when you want to.  Then you can read it online, or on other devices.”

Patrick Larkin, Burlington High School Principal tweeted:  “I have been using the Evernote app. for ipad extensively and loving it.”

Tyler Stadler tweeted: Yea, I really like evernote. Syncing across devices is a big selling point for me. I mainly use it for lists and recipes.

I have installed it and am now looking for discussion about how folks use it. Here is a video I found to get started using it on my iPad.

So, how are you using Evernote personally, professionally or in your classroom?

Jim Holland’s new Web 2.0 Tools for Educators

On February 15, 2010, in Apps, Secondary 9-12, Tools, Web 2.0, by Cyndi Danner-Kuhn

http://webapplications.wikispaces.com/

Welcome to our faithful friends and followers- our old wiki served us well with over 37,000 page views. We hope to get even more mileage out of our new home here!

Here you’ll find some of the coolest web 2.0 applications that can be used for all kinds of curriculum integration projects! Educators can create their own wiki here at wikispaces and have the ads removed for free!

Definitions:
Web 2.0
the next generation of the internet where the content of the web is created or edited by end-users (either individually or collaboratively) rather than those few geeky computer nerds. Further, these sites often allow collaboration, sharing, and assimilation to bring about exchanges of ideas from many different perspectives in the form of text, photos, videos, and/or other multimedia components

Wiki

  • Means “quick” in the native Hawaiian language or stands for “What I Know Is…” (that’s a “backronym“)
  • Collaborative website where multiple users contribute, have discussions, etc.
  • Can set permissions, track history, etc.
  • The website you are currently reading is the home page of a wiki

Widgets
Live “players” or “gadgets” that are created on Web 2.0 sites then embedded into a start page such as a wiki, blog, normal website, etc. See the example Slideroll widget below in the next section.

Linking vs. Embedding
Linking and embedding are two different methods of sharing the things you have created at various Web 2.0 sites. This is an example of an embedded widget at the right:

Sometimes you can’t embed your creations- either because your wiki/blog/start page won’t allow the type of code or because you just want to provide someone the link to your creation (like in an email or printed document). You can see the same Slideroll slideshow that plays to the right by clicking on this link.
